APPENDIX 8

Memorandum submitted by Gwynedd Hospitals NHS Trust

EMERGENCY ADMISSIONS-ADDITIONAL ALLOCATION

Whilst the additional allocation is very much welcomed, its late notification hampered the Trust in planning the effective recruitment of additional staff and the setting up of additional facilities. In this Trust we have been given approval to open additional medical beds at both Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor and Llandudno General Hospital to open an additional Intensive Care bed and also to second a Senior Nurse to the post of Emergency Admissions Co-ordinator and to liaise with Social Services and other agencies.

These services will make a significant impact on our ability to manage the additional workload over the winter months, but the trend is that the pressures are becoming not just a winter problem. We would benefit if these additional facilities were funded on a permanent basis in not only managing emergency pressures but also in continuing to meet Patient Charter standards.

Our biggest problem has been the recruitment of additional nursing staff to support the additional beds, especially as these posts are of a temporary nature. Again if these posts were permanent we would recruit quality staff and plan with their nursing colleagues the provision of suitably qualified staff.

Therefore in conclusion the Trust is appreciative of the additional funding but would have welcomed earlier notification of the funding or preferably the allocation on a recurring basis.
