Select Committee on Welsh Affairs Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 10

Memorandum submitted by Glan Clwyd District General Hospital

EMERGENCY ADMISSIONS

I am writing to give you a brief comment on the extra resouces made available to deal with emergency admissions at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Glan Clwyd Hospital has one of the highest emergency intakes in Wales and, I am pleased to say, has never closed its doors. Very occasionally we have been obliged to postpone some planned surgical admissions, all of which are rebooked within a very short space of time.

The pressures have been increasing year on year and I am pleased to say that North Wales Health Authority made available an additional £117,000 to cope this winter. This money has been made available to employ additional nurses and a discharge liaison nurse, all for a temporary period. It is anticipated that, provided there is not a huge influx of patients over a short period of time, we will cope with the demands placed on us.

The position in respect of intensive care beds remains difficult given that short term surges cause particular problems. We are working in liaison with other Trusts in North Wales to minimise the movement of patients in intensive care.

One comment I would wish to make in respect of the additional resources made available this year is that they are on a non-recurring basis. Sadly the number of emergency admissions seems to be increasing year on year and I cannot see that we will be able to manage these effectively without additional resources each year.
