SECTION A4

PRIVATE MEMBERS' MOTIONS

A new Sessional Order was agreed by the House of Commons on 19 December 1994 to allow Private Members' business (other than Bills) to be debated as a series of Adjournment Debates on Wednesday mornings for the remainder of the 1994-95 Session. The last debate on a Private Member's Motion took place on 21 October 1994. Madam Speaker made the following statement:

Under the new arrangements there will be one or two general debates between 10am and 1.00pm and up to three short debates between 1.00pm and 2.30pm. Ballots for the subjects to be debated will be held by my office under broadly the same arrangements as those which have hitherto applied for post-Consolidated Fund Bill debates and last day adjournment debates.

These changes became permanent with effect from the beginning of the 1995-96 Session. See Standing Order No 10 1995 (Wednesday sittings).
