HMP Maze

Mr. McNamara: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what response the Northern Ireland Prison Service made to Her Majesty's Inspector of Prisons report on HMP Maze; and if she will place a copy of the response in the Library. [69621]

Mr. Ingram: Her Majesty's Inspector of Prisons Report on HMP Maze has been fully considered, and those recommendations whose implementation were appropriate in the changed circumstances, have now been implemented, or are in the process of implementation.

Both I and the Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service responded publicly in statements to the press, copies of which have been placed in the Library.

Press Releases

Mr. McNamara: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many press releases were issued by the Northern Ireland Police Authority between 10 February 1998 and 31 December 1998; and how many of these notices were posted on the Police Authority Internet web site. [69619]

Mr. Ingram: The Police Authority has issued 45 press releases between 10 February 1998 and 31 December 1998. None of these releases has been placed on the Police Authority's Internet web site.

Mr. McNamara: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many press releases were issued by the Northern Ireland Prison Service between 31 May 1997 to 31 December 1998; and how many of these notices were posted on the Prison Service internet web site. [69620]

Mr. Ingram: 26 press releases on prisons matters were issued between 31 May 1997 and 31 December 1998. All were posted on the Prison Service website which is accessed through nio.gov.uk.

Terrorist Suspects (Arrest Warrants)

Mr. McNamara: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many warrants for the arrest of terrorist suspects issued by the RUC have been

outstanding (a) for more than 10 years, (b) for five to 10 years, (c) for one to five years and (d) since 10 April 1998. [69880]

Mr. Ingram [holding answer 8 February 1999]: The information requested is not maintained in a manner which permits its retrieval without incurring disproportionate cost.

Drumcree

Mr. McNamara: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many Orange parades, marches or disturbances have occurred in the vicinity of Drumcree in each month since June 1998; how many of these were legal parades; how many deaths or injuries can be associated with these disturbances; what was the additional financial cost of policing during the six months from July to December 1998; how many properties and vehicles have been damaged in the area; how many arrests have been made; in how many cases charges have been brought; and how many convictions have been secured. Mr. Ingram [holding answer 8 February 1999]: There have been 75 Orange Order parades or marches since June 1998. Of these, 38 were legal. The table shows the breakdown by month:

It is not possible to assess the total number of injuries accurately. However, 72 police officers have been injured, including 1 fatality, Constable O'Reilly. 47 criminal injury claims have been submitted, including 2 by military personnel.During the period July to December 1998, the additional costs incurred in respect of the police presence have been approximately £0.4m per month.

There have been 27 recorded incidents of damage to property and 11 to vehicles.

There have been 132 arrests, 58 people charged and 33 convicted. 80 prosecutions are pending, including 28 being reported for illegal marches.

Mr. Don Foster: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if she will list the expenditure incurred by her Department, agencies and non-departmental public bodies on (a) the setting up and (b) the operation of web sites, indicating the cases in which the expenditure has been above that budgeted; and if she will list for each web site (i) the topics covered, (ii) the current average number of hits per month and (iii) the estimated expenditure on each web site for each of the next three years.
