Mr. Flight: To ask the Minister of State, Lord Chancellor's Department what assessment he has made of the level of access for rural communities under the proposed new arrangements for the franchising of law firms providing legal aid services. [76287]
Mr. Hoon: It is for the Legal Aid Board, through its 13 Regional Legal Services Committees, to establish the legal needs and priorities of any particular community. Contracts will be granted to those quality assured legal service providers who can satisfy, as far as possible within the financial resources available, the communities' needs and priorities. The RLSC's will continue to monitor needs in their regions so that provision can be adjusted as the needs and priorities change.
Mr. Maclean: To ask the Minister of State, Lord Chancellor's Department if he will name the Ministers in his Department who are regular users of electronic Red Boxes. [76176]
Mr. Hoon: Neither the Lord Chancellor nor I yet use the new "laptop red boxes" described by the Minister for the Cabinet Office in his reply, Official Report, columns 651-52.
Mr. Vaz: To ask the Minister of State, Lord Chancellor's Department if he will list those people he has appointed to public bodies since 1 November 1998, indicating the positions to which they have been appointed and if they receive remuneration. [76464]

Dr. Cable: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many physiotherapists are employed by NHS trusts in each region of England; and how many posts are currently vacant in these regions. [74291]
Mr. Denham: Information on the numbers of physiotherapy staff employed by National Health Service trusts in each region of England as at 30 September 1997 has been placed in the Library. Information on how many posts are currently vacant in these regions is not available centrally.
Mr. Syms: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many NHS patients were waiting to be seen (a) following GP written referral and (b) following referral to consultation, for each quarter since 30 March 1997 in each (i) health authority and (ii) English region. [74740]
Mr. Denham: Information on outpatient waiting times by health authority is available only from 1998-99.
Available information on the time patients have been waiting for a first outpatient appointment following general practitioner written referral by health authority has been placed in the Library.
Mr. Syms: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the total running cost of the NHS in real terms has been in each year since 1979. [74742]

For the available information, I refer my hon. Friend to the "Department of Health NHS Hospital and Community Health Services Non Medical Workforce Census Detailed Results England: 30 September 1997", copies of which are available in the Library. Information is not collected centrally on how many of these grades were practising in the private sector.
Dr. Cable:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what was the cost to the NHS of the prescription of the drug Aricept in 1998; and how many prescriptions were issued by each health authority; [75530]
Mr. Denham:
The Department does not allocate funds specifically for prescribing the drug Aricept. Health authorities are expected to budget for the prescribing of this drug within their overall allocations.
(2) what funds each health authority in England has allocated to consultants and general practitioners for prescribing the drug Aricept in the current year. [75531]
