Miss McIntosh: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what recent representations he has received from head teachers on (a) improving school performance and (b) performance-related pay for heads; and if he will make a statement. [98281]
Ms Estelle Morris: My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State receives letters on various subjects from headteachers, and Ministers and officials have regular discussions with the associations that represent headteachers.
Miss McIntosh: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what representations he has received from head teachers regarding the timetable for the introduction of the National Grid for Learning and the Government's post-16 education and training reforms between April and September 2000; and if he will make a statement. The following research projects relating to raising standards have been commissioned directly by the Standards and Effectiveness Unit:

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many staff were employed in the Standards and Effectiveness Unit at the end of September 1999; and what the budget of the Unit is in the current year. [98297]
Ms Estelle Morris:
At the end of September 1999 the number of staff in the Unit was 204. The running cost budget for the Unit in the current year is £5.9 million.
Mrs. May:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment (1) what is the total amount of matched funding which has been pledged by business in the first year of the operation of Round Two Education Action Zones; and what proportion of that funding will be in cash; [98284]
Ms Estelle Morris:
Over £6 million for Round one and £12 million for Round two Education Action Zones has been pledged for their first year of operations. The respective shares of cash and in kind have yet to be precisely confirmed. This and other relevant financial information will be available as part of the annual audited accounts for each zone.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many staff are employed in his Private Office; how many of those staff are political appointees; and what the current year's budget is for the Private Office. [98296]
Mr. Wills:
The number of full time equivalent staff currently employed in the Private Office, working directly to the eight Ministers in the Department, is 47. This includes three full time equivalent special advisers.
The current year's budget for the Private Office is £2.2 million (excluding Ministers salaries).

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what percentage of local education authorities spend (a) below, (b) at and (c) above their standard spending assessments. [98367]
Ms Estelle Morris:
In 1999-2000 the budgeted net recurrent expenditure of 35 per cent. of local education authorities in England was below their standard spending assessment while that for 65 per cent. was above it.
Mr. Robertson:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what percentage of total spending on education is retained by each local education authority for the purpose of central administration. [98361]
