To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office what is the total number of vehicles used by her Department and its agencies fuelled by (a) petrol, (b) diesel and (c) liquid petroleum gas; and what plans she has to increase the rate of conversion of those vehicles to liquid petroleum gas. [98197]
11 Nov 1999 : Column: 829
Mr. Stringer:
The information requested is as set out and covers the vehicles owned by the Cabinet Office, its five agencies and the Central Office of Information (CoI).
Number | |
---|---|
Vehicles fuelled by petrol | 159 |
Vehicles fuelled by diesel(37) | 76 |
Vehicles fuelled by lPG(38) | 35 |
Vehicles fuelled by other energy sources | 1 |
Total | 271 |
(37) Includes vehicles fuelled by low-sulphur diesel
(38) Includes bi-fuelled vehicles
Some 242 of these vehicles are operated by the Government Car and Despatch Agency, which runs two fleets, the Government Car Service and the InterDespatch Service.
The Cabinet Office, its Agencies and the CoI are, individually, either implementing a replacement programme or investigating the scope for making greater use of alternative technologies and fuels, including liquid petroleum gas, for the vehicles they operate.
Mr. Kidney: To ask the Solicitor-General what arrangements the Serious Fraud Office will make with the Financial Services Authority to ensure the effective enforcement of the criminal law in cases of financial crime. [97842]
The Solicitor-General: The Serious Fraud Office and the Financial Services Authority, together with the Crown Prosecution Service, the Director of Public Prosecutions for Northern Ireland, the Crown Office in Scotland, the Department of Trade and Industry, Her Majesty's Treasury and the Police are working to develop guidelines for deciding who should take the lead in investigating particular instances of suspected financial misconduct and for liaison both on a regular basis and during investigations and subsequent regulatory, civil or criminal action. It is proposed to publish these guidelines when they have been finalised.
Mr. Chaytor: To ask the Solicitor-General what plans he has to set targets for the recycling of waste (a) paper, (b) cardboard, (c) glass, (d) metal, (e) plastic and (f) other products created by his Department and its agencies; and if he will make a statement. [98226]
The Solicitor-General: The Law Officers' Departments are working towards the Green Ministers' target for Government Departments of recovering a minimum of 40 per cent. of total office waste, with at least 25 per cent. of that recovery coming from recycling or composting, in 2000-01.
Towards this target, the Crown Prosecution Service has in place contracts for the collection, shredding and recycling of over 80 per cent. of classified waste paper, and is presently tendering a contract for the recycling of non-classified waste paper, cardboard, metal, glass and

plastic. The Disposal Sales Agency is used by the CPS to dispose of information technology and other obsolete equipment either by sale or recycling.
The Crown Prosecution Service, Serious Fraud Office, Treasury Solicitor's Department and Legal Secretariat to the Law Officers seek to reduce the amount of waste produced and to deal with waste by re-use, recycling, composting or incineration to produce heat and power in preference to landfill.
Mr. Chaytor:
To ask the Solicitor-General what is the total number of vehicles used by his Department and its agencies fuelled by (a) petrol, (b) diesel and (c) liquid petroleum gas; and what plans he has to increase the rate of conversion of those vehicles to liquid petroleum gas. [98199]
The Solicitor-General:
The Attorney-General and Treasury Solicitor use cars allocated by the Government Car Service. Details of their fuel types are provided in an answer given by my right hon. Friend the Minister for the Cabinet Office, on 11 November 1999, Official Report, column 828.
The Serious Fraud Office does not operate motor vehicles of any kind.
The Crown Prosecution Service operates a total of 21 vans and estate cars which are based at various locations throughout England and Wales. Of these one is fuelled by petrol and the remaining 20 run on diesel. The CPS periodically review the local availability of liquid petroleum gas with the aim of moving to this form of fuel as soon as practicable.
