Select Committee on Defence First Report

Royal Engineers

17. We note that the Royal Engineers are to be reduced from nine regiments to five. Given both the overstretch on the Royal Engineers at the time of the last Gulf War—where providing engineer support for just two brigades proved difficult[65]—and the recent questions in the House about aid to the civil power in disasters, we hope that Ministers will keep a particularly close eye on the size of our Royal Engineer reserves.
