EUROPEAN STRUCTURAL FUND (EUROPEAN SOCIAL FUND ESF) FOR MARITIME TRAINING IN THE UK

  Training for seafarers is eligible for European Social Fund (ESF) assistance, ESF forms part of the European Structural Funds. The total budget available to the UK under the ESF for training is in the order of E 5.5 billion for the period 1994-99.

  The Commission only has limited information on the measures taken in application. The general policy objectives of ESF assisted training are agreed on the European level. The measures are then implemented by the education authorities (Ministries) in the Member States.

  It is up to the Member States concerned as to what priority they give to each type of training. More detailed information regarding requests for funding and details of payments in the UK can be obtained from the Department for Education and Employment (DFEE) in London.

FUNDING OF TRAINING UNDER THE LEONARDO PROGRAMME

  The total annual budget of the Leonardo programme which assists in vocational and professional training (including the training of seafarers) over the last four years is in the order of E 140-155 million per annum, this is the total sum available for projects in the EU and EEA Member States (18 in total). The budget for 1999 (EU 15 only) is just under E 140 million.
