Memorandum by the Parliamentary Waterways Group (IT 154)

ISSUES RAISED BY THE GOVERNMENT'S WHITE PAPER ON INTEGRATED TRANSPORT

The Chairman of this Group, Bill O'Brien MP, has asked me to write to you in the context of the Government's White Paper on the future of transport to place on record this Group's warm welcome for the methods outlined for making better use of inland waterways (3.183 onwards).

In the group's view, all practical means should be undertaken to integrate water transport with other modes and provide the necessary facilities to enable Commercial Waterways to fulfil their undoubted potential for freight transport. This could include examination of electric propulsion for freight craft.
