Supplementary Memorandum by Railtrack (IT 149B)

TAXIS AND RAILWAY STATIONS

Railtrack owns over 2,500 stations, most of which are leased to train operating companies. However, there are 14 Major Stations which Railtrack manages itself: Birmingham New Street, Edinburgh Waverley, Gatwick Airport, Glasgow Central, Leeds, Manchester Piccadilly and the London stations at Euston, Liverpool Street, Charing Cross, King's Cross, London Bridge, Paddington, Victoria and Waterloo.

At the London Major Stations Railtrack does not charge taxis and "black cabs" are the only authorised providers of taxi services.

Railtrack does charge taxis to rank at Major Stations outside the capital. This practice was adopted from BR. Railtrack regularly tenders the contracts to ensure that all appropriate and qualified local companies have the opportunity to bid for the provision of taxi services. The policy has helped ensure a well ordered quality of service to passengers.

The provision of taxis at non-Major Stations is a matter for the train operating companies.
