KEY PROGRAMMES

    —  Promoting wider and more effective learning of the English language by:

      —  developing projects in English language teaching reform in collaboration with the Ministry of Education; the creation of the National Association for Teachers of English Language of Kazakhstan and a resource centre supporting their needs; writing and publication of English language textbooks; and support for the MoD's Peace Keeping English programme.

    —  Demonstrating that the UK is a committed partner in tackling key economic and democratic reform agendas in Kazakhstan by:

      —  ensuring full Kazakh participation in Know How Fund regional reform programmes and other relevant initiatives; implementing governance projects; managing projects in the area of reform (eg the Know How Fund accountancy project).

    —  Promoting the UK's role as a leading provider of educational opportunity by:

    the provision of educational information; and the promotion of English language exams.

    —  Raising awareness of the UK's creativity, cultural diversity and recent achievements by:

      —  developing a well focused, though modest, arts programme; and support for the establishment of a British Studies MA.

      —  the provision of an education enquiry service.

    —  Raising awareness of the UK's creativity, cultural diversity and recent achievements by:

      —  the development of a tightly focused, but very modest, arts programme; and support for the establishment of a British Studies MA.

    —  Demonstrating that the UK is a committed partner in tackling key economic and democratic reform agendas in Uzbekistan by:

      —  ensuring full Uzbek participation in Know How Fund regional reform programmes and other relevant initiatives; and the design and implementation of governance and reform projects.

    —  Promoting wider and more effective learning of the English language by:

      —  writing and publishing word-wise textbooks; introducing English standards and a teacher development programme in conjunction with the Ministry of Education; assisting the National Association of Teachers of Uzbekistan (supported by a resource centre).

    —  Promoting the UK's role as a leading provider of educational opportunity by:

      —  management of the President's scholarship scheme (UMID); provision of educational information; promotion of English language and professional examinations.

KEY INFORMATION ABOUT THE WORK/RESOURCES OF OUR ANALOGUES

  United States Information Services has an annual budget of US $3.5 million targeting the successor generation, US $2.8 million is spent on exchanges, the balance on information and English language teaching. The Goethe Institute focuses on language, teacher training, library services development and school textbooks. Other German agencies target good government and democracy, making the German effort significantly larger than Britain's. The Italian effort is focused on the arts and language, with a full-time direct teaching programme at Tashkent University. The Alliance Francaise has centres in Tashkent and Samarkand, operating an innovative cultural programme.
