NORTHERN IRELAND CONSUMER COMMITTEE FOR ELECTRICITY

BACKGROUND

  The Northern Ireland Consumer Committee for Electricity was set up under the Electricity (Northern Ireland) Order 1992 to represent and protect all electricity consumers in Northern Ireland.

  The Committee is completely independent of NIE and the Director General of Electricity Supply.

  The Committee consists of a Chairman and up to nine members who come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

FUNCTIONS

  The Committee:

    —  makes representations on behalf of customers to NIE;

    —  considers with NIE their treatment of customers in financial difficulty;

    —  monitors NIE's performance against their Codes of Practice;

    —  suggests changes to NIE's company practice to ensure that the customer gets an improved service;

    —  consults with advice agencies to gain further information on current problems;

    —  alerts the Director General to concerns about the security of supply or any matters relating to the supply of electricity;

    —  discusses vigorously with NIE, the Director General or any relevant public body, matters which relate to the price or supply of electricity.
