Select Committee on Northern Ireland Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 7

Further memorandum submitted by BP Amoco plc

ILLEGAL SALE OF FUEL OILS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Thank you for your recent letter asking for some further information about smuggling of fuel in Northern Ireland. I have addressed these points below.

  1.  The chart was compiled at the end of 1998 and refers to 1997 vs 1998 sales data.

  2.  It is very difficult to accurately define the precise amount of losses to illegal sales or legitimate cross-border purchases but our estimation is a 50/50 split.

  3.  The emphasis has publicly been on diesel smuggling but we are experiencing the same problems with petrol smuggling.

  4.  BP Amoco does not supply fuel to the Republic of Ireland, indeed we do not have any retail presence there.
