RESULTS

  The results to end-February 1999 are:

    —  4 successful prosecutions for smuggling of road fuels;

    —  13 cases currently with the Director of Public Prosecutions;

    —  34 arrests;

    —  6 compound penalties. These are offered by Customs in lieu of prosecutions in cases where we think it is appropriate;

    —  £59,300 in compound penalties;

    —  63 vehicles seized;

    —  583,588 litres of fuel seized;

    —  admissions of smuggling of 24.75 million litres of fuel;

    —  18 ongoing investigations.

  In addition the Road Fuel Testing Unit has:

    —  detected 255 offences involving misuse of fuel;

    —  achieved revenue receipts of £324,436;

    —  seized 5 vehicles using hidden tanks;

    —  detected 14 previous offenders;

    —  investigation and reported 3 cases of significant fraud;

    —  imposed 5 compound penalties;

    —  achieved detections from 39 per cent of its targeted challenges.
