Increase in Family Allowances between 1952 and 1975—Relevant legislation and explanation of increases

2 September 1952The Family Allowance and National Insurance Act 1952 Increased, to reflect the rising cost of food as post war subsidies, from 5s to 8s.
2 October 1956The Family Allowance and National Insurance Act 1956 Increased to 10s a week for 3rd and each subsequent child.
24 October 1967The Family Allowance (Temporary increase and consequential Provisions) Order 1967 [interim measure only] Increased to 15s a week for 4th and each subsequent child.
9 April 1968The Family Allowance and National Insurance Act 1967 Increased to 15s a week for second child and 17s a week for the 3rd and subsequent children.
8 October 1968The Family Allowance and National Insurance Act 1968 Increased to 18s a week for second child and £1 a week for the third and each subsequent child. Increased to protect the poorest families. Tax "clawback" introduced.
8 April 1975Social Security Act 1975 Increased to £1.50 for the second and each subsequent child.
