Amend the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 with respect to the selection by political parties of candidates for parliamentary or local government elections.

BE IT ENACTED by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:-
 

Amendment of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975.     1. In the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, after section 19 (ministers of religion etc.) insert-
 
 
"Selection of candidates for elections.     19A. - (1) This section applies to an act done with intent to remedy an existing inequality in the treatment of women as against the treatment of men.
 
    (2) Nothing in section 13(1) applies to the process of selection by a registered political party of a candidate for the purpose of a parliamentary or local government election.
 
      (3) In this section-
 
  "local government election" means an election which is a local government election within the meaning of section 191, 203 or 204 of the Representation of the People Act 1983 and includes an election to any English regional assembly which may be established by Act of Parliament;
 
  "parliamentary election" means-
 
 
    (a) an election to the European Parliament,
 
    (b) an election to the National Assembly for Wales,
 
    (c) an election to the Scottish Parliament, or
 
    (d) an election to the United Kingdom Parliament;
  "registered political party" means a party which is registered under Part II of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000.".
 
Short title.     2. This Act may be cited as the Sex Discrimination (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 2000.
