Janet Anderson [holding answer 25 January 2000]: My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State has received a number of representations from interested parties on the proposed mergers within ITV, which reflect a wide range of views. Details of these cannot be given due to commercial confidentiality.

Channel 5

Mr. Baker: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what proportion of programmes broadcast by Channel 5 in 1999 were of European origin as defined within EU Directive 89/552/EC. [106966]

Janet Anderson: Provisional figures for 1999 indicate Channel 5 continued to meet the requirement in the European Broadcasting Directive 89/552/EC, as amended by Directive 97/36/EC, for the majority of transmission time to be devoted to works of European origin. The initial figures indicate that 53 per cent. of broadcast time on Channel 5, excluding advertisements, sports, news, games and teletext services, was devoted to works of European origin. The final figure will be published later this year by the Independent Television Commission.

Tobacco Sponsorship

Mr. Spring: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport how much money has been raised from sponsors to replace tobacco sponsorship of sporting events by the Government Task Force on tobacco sponsorship of sport. [106445]

Kate Hoey [pursuant to the reply, 12 July 1999, c. 25W]: It is too soon to be looking to replace existing contracts and our help can most effectively be targeted in the 12 to 18 months before they lapse, which is the normal lead in time for negotiating new sponsorships. However, I am keeping in close touch with the sports involved and Task Force members are also offering ongoing advice and assistance to help the sports prepare to move away from existing tobacco sponsors.

Mr. Spring: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport when the Task Force on tobacco sponsorship of sport has met since its inception. [106444]

Kate Hoey: There have been three formal meetings of the Tobacco Sponsorship Task Force which were held on: 10 December 1998; 24 February 1999; and 19 October 1999. In addition there have been 11 meetings between officials in my Department, Task Force members, and the individual sports concerned.

Mr. Gerrard: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what data he collates regarding the monitoring of training services provided under the New Deal in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. [104102]

Ms Jowell: Responsibility for the monitoring of training services provided under the New Deal for Young People in the London Borough of Waltham Forest rests with the local partnership in the Ilford unit of delivery. The Employment Service has worked with the Training Standards Council--the independent body set up by the Secretary of State to evaluate and report on Government funded work based training--to produce a framework to assess training provision. Part of this process is an annual self assessment that in Ilford's case will take place in February 2000. To inform the inspection process the New Deal Partnership collates details of New Deal participants and information on the achievement of those who have left New Deal options. This information is broken down by gender, ethnicity and disability status. Separate statistics are compiled for each contractor involved in the local delivery of New Deal options.
