Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill

Order for Third Reading read.

Mr. Nick St. Aubyn (Guildford): On a point of order, Madam Speaker. The 22nd of the remaining orders and notices on the Order Paper is a motion standing in my name that makes a suggestion to the other place concerning an issue that affects teachers throughout the country who might be accused of offences under the Bill. Given the concern that has been expressed to me by teaching unions on this important matter--which has not been debated at any stage during the consideration of the Bill in either this or the previous Session--would you advise me whether it can be considered before a vote on Third Reading?

Madam Speaker: I have of course noted that the hon. Gentleman has tabled what is known as a suggested amendment under the Parliament Acts. It appears among the remaining orders and notices, but he must understand that I am bound by the Order of the House of 7 February under which the House must proceed directly to the Third Reading of the Bill.

Mr. St. Aubyn rose--

Madam Speaker: Order. I have not finished. Under that Order, I am required to put the Question forthwith, so the hon. Gentleman cannot make his proposal to the House. He can, of course, divide the House if he wishes.

Motion made, and Question put, That the Bill be now read the Third time.--[Mr. Jamieson.]

The House divided: Ayes 317, Noes 117.
