Forms

Mrs. Lait: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what has been the net change in each year since May 1997 in the number of forms issued by his Department which (a) charities and (b) other voluntary organisations are required to complete. [123950]

Mr. Wicks: In its monitoring of regulatory impact, DfEE does not distinguish the numbers of forms issued exclusively to charities and voluntary organisations which they are required to complete. The collation of this data could be done only at disproportionate cost. However, I am unaware of any requirement placed on charities or voluntary organisations as such, over and above what applies equally to any other providers of education, training or employment.

Part-time Employees (Pension Rights)

Mr. Boswell: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what assessment he has carried out of the costs to the further education sector of the recent European Court judgment retrospectively extending pension rights to part-time employees. [123976]

Mr. Wicks: This is a complex ruling which needs careful consideration. It also has to be referred back to the House of Lords for their judgment.

College Fees

Mr. Boswell: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what recent representations he has received in connection with the funding of college fees for graduates in receipt of financial support from a research council. [124538]

5 Jun 2000 : Column: 144W

Mr. Wicks: The Secretary of State has received no recent representations on this issue.

Higher Education Research

Mr. Boswell: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what guidance he has issued to those conducting the current review of the higher education research assessment exercise in connection with reduction of the administration requirements of the system. [124539]

Mr. Wicks: The Higher Education Funding Council for England, in collaboration with the other funding bodies in the United Kingdom, is carrying out its own fundamental review of research policy and funding. This includes an examination of the research assessment exercise and its continuing fitness for purpose. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Employment has given no guidance to the Funding Council on how to carry out this review, which is expected to result in a report for consultation later this summer.
