Bail Supervision Schemes

Mr. Win Griffiths: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the trend in (a) court case adjournments and (b) the use of secure accommodation following the introduction of bail supervision schemes. [140646]

30 Nov 2000 : Column: 920W

Mr. Charles Clarke: Figures from the Lord Chancellor's Department showing the average number and length of adjournments in the youth court since February 1999 are at annex A. Statistics are not collected centrally on the various reasons for adjournments.

Annex B summarises returns from youth offending teams on the number of remands made between 1 January 1999 and 31 March 1999, 1 April 2000 and 30 June 2000 and 1 July 2000 and 30 September 2000.

The Youth Justice Board are supporting some 120 bail supervision and support projects across England and Wales. We await full evaluation reports, but expect the schemes progressively to improve young defendants' responses to bail and hence courts' confidence in it.

Mr. Win Griffiths: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list for each police force area, for each of the last 10 years, the average time from arrest to sentence of persistent young offenders. [140647]

30 Nov 2000 : Column: 922W

Jane Kennedy: I have been asked to reply.

Arrest to sentence times for persistent young offenders in England and Wales are available from 1996 only, and by police force area from 1997 only. Arrest to sentence times by police force area can be found in the Lord Chancellor's Department Press Notice (issue 154-99--table 2) for 1997 and 1998 and the Lord Chancellor's Department Statistical Bulletin (issue 3/2000--table 2) for 1999 and the first two quarters of 2000. Copies have been placed in the House of Commons Library.

Mr. Win Griffiths: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people are in custody in each youth offenders' institution broken down by the counties, county boroughs and boroughs from which they come; and what percentage of them come from homes which are over 100 miles away from the institution concerned. [141174]

Mr. Boateng: I will write to my hon. Friend as soon as possible, and place a copy of the letter in the Library.
