Beef Exports

Mr. Nicholas Winterton: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what estimates his Department has made of the losses incurred by British farmers as a result of French and German import restrictions on British beef since 1 August. [98750]

Ms Quin [holding answer 22 November 1999]: It has not been possible to sell British beef in France or Germany since March 1996, and inevitably it will take time to build up sales when these countries lift their import restrictions. Any estimate of sales lost since 1 August would be entirely speculative.

Brixham Port

Mr. Steen: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on how many occasions he has paid a visit to Brixham in South Devon since May 1997; and if he will visit the fishing port before 2000 to discuss with local fishermen their quota problems in Area VII. [100800]

Mr. Morley [holding answer 1 December 1999]: Since 1997, I have had frequent discussions with fishermen, including those from the South West, on a wide range of matters. I shall be visiting Brixham on 6 December 1999.
