SUPPLEMENTARY MEMORANDUM SUBMITTED BY
THE BRITISH EGG INDUSTRY COUNCIL (V31)
Thank you for your letter of 4 February, enclosing
copies of the transcript of the evidence that was given by Andrew
Joret and Malcolm Sharp.
It is difficult to gauge the exact number of
egg units that will be affected by the IPPC legislation, as this
will depend on what constitutes a site. However, I enclose a copy
of an extract taken from a report from Cranfield University/Silsoe
entitled "Review of the European Pig and Poultry Industries
with particular reference to IPPC implications" (Report for
the Environment Agency for England and Wales) September 1999 [not
printed].
This shows that both MAFF and the Environment
Agency estimate (as at August 1999) that 200 holdings with laying
fowl will be covered by the legislation. However, it does point
out that "particularly in the case of poultry, any one holding
may contain more than one installation". It goes on to say
that probably in excess of 70 per cent of the poultry flock could
be covered by the IPPC regulations.
