Select Committee on Agriculture Fourth Report

MEMORANDUM SUBMITTED BY MR JAMES A. WISE, BABYLON CHICKEN LTD (V4)

I am a medium size poultry farmer, a farmer whose establishment receives no subsidy or grant from local, national or European government.

I write to you to point out that the proposed IPPC legislation will be the last straw in our over regulated industry and should this be implemented I shall no longer be able to continue in business.

The local environmental officers already liaise with poultry producers on these matters and have powers to deal with problems should they arise, indeed if planning applications are made they are accompanied by environmental impact studies as required by existing legislation.

The proposed charges for inspection and registration are draconian, given the current state of agriculture it can only mean bankruptcy and the rapid demise of the British poultry industry leading to even more imports from countries who are less inclined to apply legislation as strictly, if at all in some instances.

In the past when mentioning problems to officials and Members of Parliament, the stock answer is "give me evidence this is all new to me" this is no longer the case as the EU itself has gone deeply into welfare and hygiene issues and has opened up a can of worms particularly with reference to Thailand, Brazil and most disturbing in France. I trust that all members of your committee have diligently studied these and will bear the evidence in mind.
