MEMORANDUM SUBMITTED BY THE NATIONAL PIG
ASSOCIATION (V18)
The National Pig Association would like to support
the views and concerns detailed in the submission from the National
Farmers Union to the Inquiry into Environmental Regulation and
Farming.
The NPA would also like to express our strong
interest in working in a collaborative and effective way with
the stakeholders concerned, as we recognise environmental considerations
as an important issue pertaining to UK pig production. We seek
to develop and UK framework for environmental management whereby
pig producers are able to grow and develop their businesses and
continue to be competitive in global terms.
The full details of the NPA's Environmental
Policy are attached (see Annex).
The NPA will be happy to contribute oral evidence
to this important Inquiry and answer any other written questions
that the Committee may have.

POLICY STATEMENT
The NPA aims to be a progressive organisation
that recognises environmental considerations as an important issue
pertaining to UK pig production. It will actively seek to work
with other stakeholders on all matters that link pig production
and environmental issues.
In particular it recognises the need to minimise
the impact that pig production has on the environment. To this
end it will encourage its members to have workable manure management
plans and it will seek to ensure that good agricultural practice
is widely adopted. It will work to ensure compliance with current
legislation.
The NPA will establish a working relationship
with the EA and seeks to be involved in the preparation of guidelines,
protocols, codes of practice and regulations pertinent to the
whole of the UK pig industry.
The NPA wishes to see a UK framework for environmental
management developed wherein pig producers are able to grow and
develop their businesses such that they continue to be competitive
in global terms. In connection with this NPA will attempt to liaise
with research organisations to ensure that research projects address
issues of practicality and economics.
The NPA will build up an unprecedented profile
of its members in terms of their production systems and sizes.
This will enable the organisation to better address the issues
that will affect its members.
