Select Committee on Administration Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 6

Memorandum submitted by Mr A R Bull (Q8)

As the owner of a small mixed dairy farm, struggling to survive this latest farming economic crisis, I, like thousands of others throughout England and Wales, have seen our source of income fall dramatically over the last three years.

  • Liquid milk down from 25p to 16p per litre
  • Cull cows down from £500 to £298
  • Calves down from £80 to £15

Also, how is it that European farmers can escape the strict rules and regulations the British farmer has to adhere to concerning animal welfare and animal feed (beef and bonemeal is still being included in animal feed on the continent), enabling them to produce meat far cheaper than the British farmer?

Cheap imported meat and dairy products must be greatly reduced otherwise farmers like myself will not survive. However, perhaps this is in the scheme of things, and only when inferior produce from our European "friends" is all that is available, the Government and the General Public will be happy.
