Select Committee on Administration Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 22

Letter to James Gray MP from Mr David Clover

In reply to your request, here are a few facts about my own plight.

    1.  The milk price since June 1997 has gone down five pence per litre, on 1,000,000 litres a drop of £50,000 in income. Reason strong £, and questionable milk buying.
    2.  The OTMS has gone down about £30-40/cow. Reason: Value of Euro-£.
    3.  Calf slaughter scheme (used successfully in EU) down about 50 per cent.
    4.  Electric and water prices up. I am paying 61.59p per &3 this year, last year 56.57p, a rise of 10 per cent.
    5.  Fuel and transport costs up.

Net result: loss of income—rise in expenditure.

Next year looks even worse.

I hope this is useful to you.

13 June 1999
