Select Committee on Agriculture Minutes of Evidence

MEMORANDUM SUBMITTED BY MR NICK BRADLEY (F 46)

With reference to your letter of 27 June, I write to let you have basic details of my experience of Organic Farming.

I am primarily an Arable farmer with 380 hectares, and also a 15,500 bird poultry enterprise.

In 1999, I entered 22 hectares into the Organic Farming Scheme, most of which was the free range pasture needed for the poultry, the remainder being arable land intended purely as a pilot operation.

I recently withdrew the free range area from the scheme as a result of confusion over standards and concerns over being able to finance the conversion period, which is apparently commercially unviable. I recently received the first grant payment for the arable field left in the scheme.

I am currently working with the Lincolnshire Organic Producers (The MAFF funded consultancy and marketing company in Lincoln) to convert 40 ha of arable and 30 ha of rough pasture into an integrated organic enterprise with beef cattle.

I am a member of the Organic Farmers and Growers.
