Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 16

Memorandum submitted by Mr Tim Marshall

Amongst its deliberations on the Wembley affairs, I hope the Committee will have time to consider the two following questions:

  1.  In relation to a permanent athletics facility in a 60,000+ seater stadium, how many athletic events are there, in the whole world, each year, with the ability to attract an audience of that capacity; and how many such events might reasonably be expected to be attracted to England each year (or in a 50 year period)? It also may be instructive to consider the fate of the athletics track in Atlanta after the last Olympics, and what is planned for the Sydney track after this year's games.

  2.  In relation to a new, dedicated athletics facility for, say, 25,000 spectators in London, what are the implications for Crystal Palace, Birmingham Alexander Stadium, Sheffield Don Valley Stadium, and Gateshead Stadium, with respect to their ability to attract athletic events with any kind of live spectator audience in future.

I must declare an interest to you: I am a member of the English Sports Council (aka Sport England); but this submission is entirely my own, and does not form part of the "official" submission.
