Viewing figures for the BBC's digital
channels
As the Committee are aware, precise viewing
figures for digital platforms are in their infancy. A small BARB
sample of the reach of SkyDigital channels was released a fortnight
ago and the BBC have recently made available the results of a
series of viewing diaries that were conducted in association with
ONdigital. Although the methodology of both surveys was very different,
we have listed the results below[1].
The following "reach" figures denote
the percentage of people who actually watched the channel for
three minutes or more.
VIEWING OF
BBC DIGITAL CHANNELS
IN SKYDIGITAL
HOMES
Week ending 7 January 1999
BBC1 and BBC2 achieved a combined higher reach
than any other broadcaster (89.7 per cent).
Reach of individual channels:
BBC One: | 87.04 per cent
|
BBC Two: | 72.91 per cent |
BBC News 24: | 5.03 per cent
|
BBC Knowledge: | 1.36 per cent
|
BBC Choice: | 18.95 per cent
|
VIEWING OF
BBC DIGITAL CHANNELS
IN ONDIGITAL
HOMES
Fortnight ending 26 September 1999
Again, amongst the adults asked, the BBC was the most watched
broadcaster in terms of reach (89.2 per cent).
Reach of individual channels:
BBC One: | 85.54 per cent |
BBC Two: | 49.66 per cent |
BBC News 24: | 12.74 per cent
|
BBC Knowledge: | 3.78 per cent
|
BBC Choice: | 8.25 per cent
|
It is worth noting that the reach of BBC digital channels
in both ONdigital and SkyDigital homes is higher than in analogue
multichannel homes (88.6 per cent).

The discrepancies between the results and the small sample sizes
suggest the date is not yet robust. Back
