REQUESTS FOR REPATRIATION OF OBJECTS FROM
THE COLLECTIONS OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM
Over the past 30 years (1970-1999), some 27
foreign requests for repatriation have been received. The nature
and source of the requests vary considerably. Some bids have been
government to government, some have been government to British
Museum, others have been less formal, involving individual politicians,
cultural leaders or museum services. On occasion, informal suggestions
are made by visiting delegations but do not develop into actual
requests and are not included in the figure above. Also omitted
are requests made for relocation within the United Kingdom.
