Select Committee on Deregulation First Report

Letter from Miss Julia G Cooke

I am concerned and extremely distressed at the proposals being put forward concerning extensions to the licensing hours of restaurants.

These proposals will not only make for more work on the Lord's day but will be an extended annoyance to those who live in the area of the restaurants because of noise and increase of late night traffic. For the sake of pleasing some, especially those who provide the liquor, out to increase their profit, many more will have to suffer being unable to rest quietly in their own homes. Having lived near a club for a good number of years I know somewhat of the disturbances of late night drinking can cause, and of the great benefit that has been brought about since its closure.

It will also increase the break-up of family life. Sunday has always been a good day for families to be together, but sad to say more and more relaxation of Sunday laws, which have been beneficial to our community in years past, in intruding into their lives. The break-up of families is an increasing scourge in our nation and needs to be prevented rather than encouraged. Children suffer the most. Please think of them.
