We support reform of the 1780 Sunday Observance Act as we are keen to have the right to apply to open on a Sunday. We believe that individuals should have the right to determine how best to spend their leisure time providing this does not impact on the right of others to peace and quiet.

We welcome the measures contained within the Order to protect local residents and employees. Because we will need to apply to our local authority to open on a Sunday there will be local control and accountability.

We believe there is widespread public support for reform. In addition to our customers and employees, beneficiaries will include taxi drivers, fast food outlets, restaurants, charities, fundraising events and dance schools.

The nightclub trade association, British Entertainment & Discotheque Association (BEDA) has proposed a code of practice, which enables staff to opt out of Sunday working if they wish. The Government's Order contains this code of conduct and we are happy to work within its rules.

We believe that these proposals represent a sensible alliance of rights for consumers and safeguards for the public and employees. We therefore believe they will be widely welcomed and we fully support the Order.
