Select Committee on Deregulation First Report

Letter from the Clerk of the Committee to the British Entertainment and Discotheque Association Ltd

The Committee has a further matter, relating to the protection of employees, that it wishes to bring to BEDA's attention.

In its correspondence with the Trades Union Congress, the Committee was alerted to the issue of safe transport home, particularly for women, where public transport may be sparse in the early hours of Mondays.

The Committee has noted the draft Sunday Employment Code of Conduct which aims to ensure that employees present and future will not be required to work on a Sunday against their wishes.

I write now to convey the Committee's request that BEDA considers adding a further clause to the Code, to require that the employer assumes responsibility for ensuring that staff are protected by the provision of late transport.

The Committee also wishes to know how BEDA intends to regulate its members to ensure compliance in these matters.
