Select Committee on Education and Employment Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Annex D

I thought I ought to pass on a concern raised with me during a Q and A session following a talk I gave yesterday to the Central Council of Physical Recreation.

Joanne Collins, of the Ice Hockey Players' Association, recounted a conversation she had had with a member of the Overseas Liaison Section of the DfEE in respect of a person overseas who was seeking a work permit to take up employment in the UK. The claim is that a criminal record abroad is not a factor in deciding whether to issue a work permit. The extreme example is that a work permit might be issued to a known and convicted paedophile to enable them to work with children in this country. This is of interest to sports governing bodies since numbers of overseas sportspeople seek employment here.

As this is well off my patch, I said that I would raise this with you. I apologise if my enquiry is misdirected and I am copying to Sandy Murphy in the event that the answer lies with him.

Can you, or Sandy, confirm the actual position please? I am also copying this to Joanne Collins for information. I'm sure she would appreciate a copy of your reply.
