Select Committee on Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Memorandum by Warwickshire Constabulary (TF 38)

In response to your correspondence of 4 February, we would make the following comments:

    (a)  There is a perception of increased levels of crime, however these are usually minor: ie criminal damage. The majority of disruption is to road traffic and trade. Road closures and diversions cause significant problems. The other aspect is that these travelling fairs often provide the opportunity for disorder amongst young people.

    (b)  Increased policing costs are incurred in provision of no waiting signs, traffic diversions and extra patrols to dispel disorder.
