Memorandum by Roger Tuby & Son (TF
60)
REF: SHOWMANS PERMANENT HOMES, WINTER QUARTERS,
BASES ETC.
Please find enclosed details of planning permission
and photos of Rhodes Fair Acres Showman's accommodation. [9]
On applying I first called to see my local councillors
with artists impressions of the way I intended to develop the
land. The councillors knew me as a man who would keep his word
and I assured them it would be done properly, with many hundreds
of trees planted. A proper and road fenced in a way to improve
the local area.
The permission was granted on the first presentation.
Mr Roger Tuby
Member of the Showmans Guild.
SOME OF
THE PROBLEMS
FUN FAIR
OPERATORS ACRUE
IN APPLYING
FOR NEW
SITES
1. No answer to application. After many
phone calls still no answer. This has happened many times.
2. Officers too busy to deal with application
easier to refuse.
3. Officer does not like Fun Fairs refuse
application.
4. Councillor near election will not make
decision in case odd voter does not like it.
5. Passed from one officer to another until
too late to process application.
6. Officer or councillor are unsure on the
application refusal.
7. If only one resident nearby complains
before we arrive, refusal.
8. Councillors either don't answer letters
or refuse to see you.
9. No form of appeal against unfair decisions.
10. Rent put up excessively on existing
fairs making them not viable.
11. Fuel prices are causing great concern.
12. Treated like second class citizens from
those who have not met us.
13. There should be designated central event
sites with proper facilities in each town or city ie water, electric,
toilets, not on the outskirts in central areas like other European
countries.
14. Our equipment is second to none our
sites are usually poor to say the least.
FUN FAIR
SITES
I have invested very heavily in Fairground rides
in recent years. My whole life and my families lives revolve around
fairgrounds. It is unbelievable my business relies on a one year
let, we should have at least a five year lease, on established
sites, on land that may alter or that be wanted for building on
a clause could be in agreement to cover this.
I must point out these problems do not occur
with all authority but do happen on a regular basis with at least
70 per cent of authorities.
To further my arguments and name the poor authorities
I would look forward to speaking in front of your committee.
To round off may I point out fairs have been
around since medieval days and are part of our heritage of which
I am proud of. This country celebrated the millennium with a giant
big wheel which must be a plus for our way of life.
