Select Committee on Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Memorandum by Tameside Metropolitan Borough (TF 66)

I understand from Councillor Gwynne that you are conducting an inquiry into this issue and would welcome some comments on our experience.

Tameside has three such sites, at Catherine Street and Milton Street, Denton, both in industrial areas, and at Mill Lane in Hyde, a longstanding Green Belt site.

You will remember the relocation of the travelling showman from the motorway line in Audenshaw. We are also currently dealing with a planning application to relocate the Milton Street site, to an industrial site at Park Road, in Dukinfield.

Government guidance is set out in circular 22/91 and in general, we have found this to be practical and relevant. As a mixed use, showman sites can be difficult to pigeonhole, but in conurbation, like Tameside, it has proved possible to find acceptable low value, industrial sites.

It must be confessed that Tameside UDP makes no reference to travelling showman, although this is advised in the circular. In practice I believe the guidance in the circular is perfectly adequate to deal with applications, I believe it would be unrealistic and unnecessary for plans to make specific allocations for showmen.
