THE PRICE OF FUEL

  Eighty-five per cent of the price of diesel is taxation, the Government had fuel duty revenues of £21.6 billion in 1998-99 and projects £22.5 billion in 1999-2000, and £23.5 billion in 2000-01.

  The industry commissioned research from the Centre for Economics and Business Research Ltd to examine the economic consequences of the widening gap between UK and European duty rates. The following table details the impact on the haulage industry, calculated in terms of jobs lost:
