EAST EUROPEAN HGV DRIVER WAGE COSTS
Further to our earlier note, I have received
information on wage costs of hgv driver wage engaged in international
operations in Romania and Slovakia. The attached table draws together
this data and previous wage information for Hungary submitted
to the Commitee on 24 May 2000.
The table compares the wage costs that we have
been able to obtain for these countries with typical wage costs
for a UK driver engaged on domestic journeys. UK wage data is
taken from FTA's Manager's Guide to Distribution Costs and covers
pay rates as at 1 January 2000.
The table shows a clear cost advantage which
operators who use east European drivers benefit from when competing
against UK hauliers.
If you would like to discuss any aspect of the
data please do not hesitate to contact me.
