Annex 1
The CBI supports the following principles in
pursuit of sustainable minerals development:
(a) Resource Development
The proximity principle, although the reasonable
application of this recognises that in many parts of the country
local supply is not possible.
The optimum use of the available resource, through
efficiency of production, use, waste minimisation, recycling,
recovery and use of secondary materials.
The minimisation of the effects of transport,
by the use of rail and sea transportation and effective lorry
routing and management.
(b) Land Use
The implementation of high quality land restoration
to support future beneficial after-use.
The careful design and operation of sites to
minimise any adverse environmental impacts during extraction operations.
The protection of the long-term value associated
with landscape, biodiversity and other aspects of the environment,
particularly within areas designated for their importance.
(c) Social and Economic Contribution
The inclusion of the views of the community
in decisions affecting the development of the mineral resource.
Close involvement with local communities through
local liaison, support for local events and other activities.
Commitment to employees, integrated training,
and high standards of health and safety.
Optimisation of the economic contribution of
mineral development to the local and national economy.
The development of an effective, efficient and
globally competitive raw materials industry.
The attainment of the most effective and efficient
means of regulation with minimum impact on business.
