Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 34

Memorandum submitted by Denise and David Fowler

We would like to submit to you the following points of great concern to us: in the world-wide political climate we are in at the moment, especially in view of the latest confrontational attitude of the Russian Government, it is vitally important that Britain plays an active role in promoting world-wide nuclear disarmament. The Non-Proliferation Treaty is crumbling, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty has not been signed by the United States.

It behoves Britain, therefore, to put pressure on the US, and to take the lead in trying to prevent the alarming spread of weapons of mass destruction. If Britain were to comply with all the treaties to which it is a signatory, it would set a much needed example.

We hope that you will give our comments your valued consideration, as this is the peaceful future of the world that is in the balance.
