FOREIGN SECRETARY APPEALS FOR CALM FOLLOWING ESCALATION OF VIOLENCE IN MIDDLE EAST

Following reports of an escalation of the violence in the Middle East, the Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, who is currently on a tour of the region, said:

"I am greatly shocked to hear reports of an escalation of the violence, including the gruesome murder of Israeli soldiers this morning in Ramallah and retaliatory attacks by Israeli forces. The appalling cycle of violence must be stopped. It is vital for everyone to keep cool heads. I urge both sides to do their utmost to restore calm and resume the search for peace."
