COOK WELCOMES OUTCOME OF SHARM EL-SHEIKH SUMMIT

Commenting on the outcome of the Sharm El-Sheikh summit on 17 October, the Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, who is accompanying Her Majesty The Queen on her State Visit to Italy, said:

"I welcome the agreement in Sharm El-Sheikh and congratulate the parties on their courage and leadership. As President Clinton said, we should have no illusions about the difficulties of turning the agreement into a reality on the ground. Only a just and lasting settlement can avoid a recurrence of the violence we have seen in recent weeks.

"The committee of inquiry must be used to learn the lessons that can prevent future bloodshed. Both sides now must work urgently to seize this opportunity to get the peace process back on track.

"Britain will be ready to help with the search for peace in any way we can."
