Select Committee on Home Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 14

Letter from the National Farmers' Union of Scotland to the Clerk of the Committee

CONTROL OF FIREARMS

I refer to our telephone conversation last week, and having taken instruction from the Chairman of the Union's Legal and Technical Committee, I can advise you that we identify very closely with the comments submitted by the NFU of England and Wales on the question of control of firearms. In particular, we welcome the recognition that there is a need for a comprehensive review of firearms legislation, particularly in view of the inconsistencies in interpretation between various police force firearms departments. Otherwise our views are identical with our colleagues in the NFU of England and Wales—bar that is for figures in Annex 1 of their comments. In Scotland the returns from deer stalking are considerably higher than those indicated for England and Wales.
