Select Committee on Social Security Third Special Report

APPENDIX

USE OF THE POWER GRANTED BY SECTION 82 OF THE WELFARE REFORM AND PENSIONS ACT 1999: RESPONSE TO THE 2ND REPORT OF THE SOCIAL SECURITY COMMITTEE

I wrote to you on 23 February, enclosing a copy of the redrafted report on the power to incur expenditure on child support. Your Committee subsequently considered the Report and published its response on 21 March. The Report itself was laid before the House on 13 March, was debated in Standing Committee and approved by the House on 11 April.

I am pleased by the response contained in the Committee's Second Report. I am sure that the Committee's statement played an important part in assuring the House in the initial use of this procedure. The important thing is that we now have Parliamentary authority to get started on the detailed work that will make a reality of child support reform.
