Prisoner Accommodation
Mr. Stinchcombe:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners in each Prison Service establishment are held (a) two to a cell in a single cell and (b) three to a cell in a double cell. [144948]
Mr. Boateng:
The number of prisoners held two to a cell designed for one and those that are in accommodation units where prisoners exceed the uncrowded capacity at the end of November 2000 are listed in the table. These figures are provisional and subject to validation.
The Prison Service does not collect centrally the number of prisoners held three to a cell designed for two. Prisons provide data on the total overcrowding level and on the numbers held two to a cell designed for one, known as 'doubling'. Total overcrowding includes those held three to a cell for two and those overcrowded in dormitories and larger cells.

Miss Widdecombe:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners are sharing (a) two to a cell designed for one and (b) three to a cell designed for two at the latest date for which figures are available; what the equivalent figure was for each of the last three years; and if he will make a statement. [144962]
15 Jan 2001 : Column: 101W
Mr. Boateng:
The average number of prisoners held two in a single cell at the end of November 2000 and at the same point in each of the last three years is given in the table. Figures for November 2000 are provisional and subject to validation by prisons.
The Prison Service does not collect data on the number of prisoners held three in a double cell. Prisons report the total overcrowding level, which includes prisoners held three to a cell for two and those overcrowded in dormitories and larger cells. Overcrowding figures are not collected in this form before April 1998.
