Select Committee on Agriculture Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Memorandum submitted by the Director, Euro-Japan International Ltd (D 26)

I write concerning the plans for re-organisation of Horticulture Research International and in particular the plan to close Stockbridge House development site at Cawood, Selby, Yorkshire. My company, Euro-Japan International, act as consultants for a number of Japanese Manufacturers involved in trialling and developing new products into UK and EC. We have made extensive use of the facilities and horticultural knowledge at Stockbridge House for many years. This research and development has been of benefit to UK horticulture and, has been a valuable source of income and employment to both HRI and Stockbridge House. It has greatly enhanced the standing of our research efforts and increased the skills of the staff.

HRI and the Government both state they wish to strengthen links with UK Horticulture; this process was admirably served by the existing Stockbridge House centre and, the proposal to close it down will only decrease links with the Industry that HRI is supposed to serve, and lessen UK standing in this area as a place for forward thinking research and development.

Our plea on behalf of horticultural product development in our industry, is to retain this centre of excellence through linking it in toto to the Central Science Laboratory at York.
