Supplementary memorandum from the University
of Durham (HE 82)
I am writing further to confirm the information
provided by Professor Sir Kenneth Calman during his evidence this
morning about our admissions policy with regard to applicants
who also apply to Oxford or Cambridge.
For entry in October 2000, we have received
21,808 applications. Of these, 6,056 have also applied to Oxford
or Cambridge or 27.8 per cent. We have made offers to 4,466 such
students or 73.7 per cent. Of the 15,752 applications we have
received from individuals who have not applied to Oxford or Cambridge,
we have made 7,989 offers or 50.7 per cent. As you can tell from
these figures there are no grounds for suggesting that the University
discriminates against applicants who also apply to Oxford or Cambridge.
