Select Committee on Education and Employment Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Letter to the Chairman of the Education Sub-committee from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools

6 November 2000

Thank you for your letter of 1 November concerning the appointment of the new Director for Early Years.

We considered very carefully the major requirements of the post and concluded that the key ones were related to management experience and expertise. This decision was based on the real needs of this challenging post. We have not excluded the possibility that an appropriate candidate could have both the management expertise and experience of the early years. However, clear priority has been accorded to the former.

If the person appointed does not have early years expertise then we shall most definitely be looking for it within those appointed to the Director's senior team. It is the overall expertise of the senior team which is important.
